Deer mineral lick setup guide - when, where and how to maximize visits
Why mineral licks work - the biology behind it
Deer have specific mineral requirements that forest plants rarely meet completely - especially sodium, calcium, phosphorus, and zinc. When a deer discovers a reliable mineral source, it incorporates that location into its regular territory. That's exactly what you want.
When to set up your mineral site
Spring (April-May): The absolute best time. Bucks are growing antlers and need maximum calcium and phosphorus. Does need minerals for fetal development. Both sexes actively seek mineral supplementation after winter.
Summer (June-August): Antler growth peaks. Maintain the site and it will become a trail camera goldmine.
Fall: Continue feeding the habit you've established, but realize the function shifts from nutrition to behavioral anchoring.
Where to place your mineral site
- Quiet area with minimal human disturbance
- Near a natural travel corridor
- Close to water when possible - deer naturally move from water to food
- Not directly on your main hunting access path

One rule above all
Consistency beats quantity. One well-maintained mineral site visited by deer regularly is infinitely more valuable than three sites you charge once and forget.
