Scent Drag Technique: How to Lead a Buck Straight to Your Stand
The Scent Drag: Redirect a Moving Buck Directly to You
A scent drag is one of the most underused but effective rut hunting techniques. Instead of waiting for a buck to find your site, you create an olfactory highway that leads him directly to your shooting lane.
Equipment You Need
A piece of felt, microfiber cloth, or fox tail on a string (25m long). The material holds liquid scent and deposits it on vegetation as you walk. Avoid plastic - it doesn't disperse scent effectively.
How to Deploy the Drag
- Apply your rut scent generously to the drag material
- Attach to your boot or drag behind you on a string
- Walk from 200m out toward your stand, ending at your shooting lane
- Hang the drag wick at nose height (1-1.2m) directly in your shooting lane

The perfect drag scent - long-lasting liquid formula deposits well on vegetation

Best results during the pre-rut and peak rut (October 25 - November 15 in Ontario, October 20 - November 10 in Quebec). A cruising buck will literally turn off his course and follow your drag line. When it ends at your stand, that's your shot.
