How to Set Up a Mock Scrape That Actually Works

What is a Mock Scrape and Why Does It Work?

A scrape is a communication hub for whitetail deer - bucks paw the ground and deposit scent to signal their presence to other deer. A mock scrape mimics this natural behavior, creating a focal point on your property where deer interact all season long.

Step 1: Choose the Right Location

Look for a natural licking branch hanging 4-5 feet above the ground on a trail or field edge. If there isn't one, create it - a branch with multiple small twigs works best. Deer come to smell and chew the branch, not just the ground scrape.

Step 2: Build the Scrape

Clear a 2-3 foot circle of leaves down to bare dirt. Use a stick (not your bare hands) to scratch and turn the soil. The soil disruption is what catches the deer's attention from a distance.

Step 3: Apply Scent

Step 4: Camera Placement

Set your trail camera at a 45-degree angle to the scrape, 6-8 feet away. This angle captures the deer's face and gives you a clear ID shot. Check it from a safe distance to avoid contaminating the area.
