Moose Calling vs Attractants: When to Use Each Tactic
Two Weapons, Two Situations
Moose calling and olfactory attractants are not competing strategies - they're complementary tools for different situations. The best hunters use both, at the right time, for the right reason.
When Calling Works Best
Calling is most effective during the peak rut (last week of September, first week of October) when bulls are actively searching for cows. A cow moan or bull grunt during this window can pull a moose from 500+ meters. Calling also works when you've confirmed a bull is nearby but he's hung up - he needs a nudge to commit.
When Attractants Work Best
Attractants work continuously - all day, every day, with no effort from you. They're especially valuable when hunting solo (you can't call and be ready to shoot simultaneously) and for building a site that moose return to habitually.

Set your PURINE or Moose Trophy site at least 3 days before your hunt. On your hunting day: arrive quietly, let the site work. If a bull is nearby but not approaching, add a soft cow moan. The combination of active scent site + vocal confirmation is nearly impossible for a rut-crazed bull to resist.
