Ontario Moose Hunting: Northern and Southern Zone Strategies 2026
Ontario Moose: Two Zones, Two Strategies
Ontario offers moose hunting in both northern WMUs (draw tags) and, in select years, special seasons in transition zones. The northern boreal represents some of the best moose density in eastern Canada.
Northern Ontario Moose (WMU 1-47)
The northern Ontario moose is larger than its Quebec counterpart and lives in more open boreal terrain. Attractants can be detected from greater distances in this environment. Start building your site 3-4 weeks before your hunt date.

The gold standard - natural moose cow urine that works in Ontario boreal and mixed forests

Ontario moose rut peaks slightly earlier than Quebec - often September 20 - October 5 in the northern zones. Build your site by September 1 to capture the full pre-rut and rut activity.

Pre-season site builder - install in August for peak September-October activity

Always check the Ontario hunting regulations (MNRF) for current moose tag availability in your WMU. Tags are limited and draw-based - knowing your zone's regulations is essential before planning your attractant strategy.
